comic strip dispatches
These comics were produced in a workshop with illustrator and cartoonist Jon McNaught, who is the kind of practitioner that makes you want to break into his home and steal the crystal orbs from which he draws his powers - he’s brilliant.
I had just finished Joan Didion’s Slouching Towards Bethlehem the weekend prior, so I was in a state where I believed that I could be the next Joan Didion of personal comics making, and these strips were the result. All of these were real people that I’ve encountered when walking around Glasgow.
You can zoom in on the strips by clicking on them in your browser.
Things I’ve enjoyed recently:
3-Iron, a 2004 film directed by Kim Ki-duk, in which a homeless drifter who breaks into empty homes falls in love with an abused woman. That logline makes it sound totally unwatchable, but it’s a moving and strange meditation on the things that dwell in liminal spaces;
In Slouching Towards Bethlehem, On Keeping A Notebook and Goodbye To All That felt like essays you could bring along with you for the rest of your life;
As always, thanks for reading!
